Switzerland expects 21% increase in university students by 2035

Projections from the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO) indicate a significant shift in the Swiss educational landscape. By 2035, the number of university students is expected to increase by 21 percent, reaching an estimated 305,000, while the number of school-aged children is expected to decline.

This demographic shift has sparked debate among politicians and business representatives regarding labor market readiness and the role of vocational training. National Councilor Bettina Balmer (FDP) has expressed concern over the trend, advocating for stronger vocational education to ensure diverse career paths and to prevent an over-reliance on academic degrees. Similarly, National Councilor Katharina Prelicz-Huber (Green Party) emphasized the need to make vocational training more attractive and noted that rapid advancements in artificial intelligence necessitate continuous lifelong learning.
