Switzerland faces trade tensions with US and new free trade deal with China

Switzerland is navigating divergent trade pressures from the United States and China. US President Donald Trump has threatened to terminate business relations with Switzerland, accusing the country of benefiting from the American market without making an adequate contribution. Trump specifically cited interest rate disparities and trade imbalances as grounds for his criticism, claiming Switzerland is among approximately 60 nations that live “at the expense of the United States.”

In contrast, Switzerland and China have concluded negotiations to optimize their free trade agreement. Swiss Economic Minister Guy Parmelin announced in Bern that the updated deal will allow 99.8 percent of current Swiss exports to China to eventually enter the market duty-free. This includes significant benefits for the watch, machinery, and pharmaceutical sectors, with an estimated economic saving potential of 244 million Swiss francs. While most goods will see immediate or mid-term tariff reductions, products such as roasted coffee and cheese will be subject to a ten-year transition period.
