Switzerland gears up for World Cup clash against Qatar

Switzerland’s national team is set to open Group B of the FIFA World Cup against Qatar in Santa Clara. Captain Granit Xhaka said the squad is eager to enjoy the moment and deliver its best performance, describing the tournament as potentially the best World Cup for the Swiss. He emphasized the team’s mental and physical readiness and the desire to play their “A‑game” for the country and their families.

Coach Murat Yakin highlighted the experience within the squad, noting that several players have participated in previous World Cups and that the team has learned from past early exits. A win would place Switzerland at the top of the group ahead of Bosnia and Herzegovina and co‑hosts Canada. Qatar, the defending Asian champions, have yet to win a World Cup match.

The match is the second competitive meeting between the two nations, the first being a 2018 friendly won by Qatar. Swiss midfielders Granit Xhaka and Ricardo Rodríguez are expected to set a record with their 13th World Cup appearance if they play.
