Switzerland: Heatwave preparedness and local budget votes
In Switzerland, political leaders and local voters are addressing climate-related and budgetary concerns. The Swiss National Council has called for an urgent debate regarding extreme weather conditions and heatwaves. Federal Councillor Albert Rösti is expected to respond to inquiries from various political parties, including the Greens, Socialists, and the UDC, regarding the nation's preparedness for future heatwaves. Concerns raised include the resilience of forests, agricultural support, water storage, and necessary adaptations for hospitals, schools, and outdoor working conditions.
The Federal Council has previously allocated additional funds to agriculture and forestry and plans to publish a revised climate change adaptation strategy and a 2026-2031 action plan this autumn.
At the local level in Lancy, residents voted to reject proposed budget cuts for 2026. The electorate approved the restoration of school start-of-year allowances, subsidies for soft mobility, and municipal contributions toward health insurance premiums for municipal employees. These measures were supported by significant majorities, with the school allowance and mobility subsidies both receiving over 67% approval.
