Switzerland hotel overnight stays decline in August 2026
Swiss hotels recorded a 2.1 percent decrease in overnight stays in August 2026 compared to the same month in the previous year. According to the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (BFS), approximately 4.88 million overnight stays were registered, reflecting a decline among both foreign and domestic tourists.
Foreign tourist stays dropped by 2.6 percent, while domestic stays saw a 1.5 percent decrease. The decline in international visitors is attributed in part to the conflict in the Middle East, which has caused disruptions to major international flight routes. These disruptions have particularly impacted travel from Asia, including India, China, Southeast Asia, and the Gulf States.
Data from January to August 2026 shows a total of 30.2 million overnight stays, a 0.7 percent decrease from the record year of 2025. During this eight-month period, foreign stays fell by 2.2 percent, with significant drops noted from India (23 percent), the Gulf States (16 percent), and China (approximately 7 percent). Conversely, domestic demand grew by 0.9 percent during the same period.
