Switzerland implements alpine safety and pass closures for winter
As winter approaches in the Swiss Alps, authorities are implementing safety measures to protect people and infrastructure from avalanches. Specialists monitor slopes and use over 600 fixed explosion systems to trigger controlled avalanches, preventing larger, spontaneous slides. The SLF Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research in Davos provides critical data through its avalanche bulletin to guide these safety decisions.
Concurrently, seasonal changes are affecting alpine transit. Several mountain passes are beginning to face restrictions. While major routes like the Gotthard and Grimsel passes remain open, others such as the Furka and Susten passes have already implemented night closures. Full winter closures for many passes typically begin in November and last until late spring, depending on weather and snow conditions.
