Switzerland implements strict water restrictions amid acute drought
Switzerland is facing a severe water crisis due to extreme heat and prolonged drought. Following a level four drought warning from MeteoSuisse, nearly all 26 cantons have implemented strict water usage restrictions.
In regions such as Aargau and Basel, authorities have prohibited residents from washing cars, watering gardens, or filling swimming pools. The agricultural sector is also heavily impacted, with bans in place for farmers attempting to draw water from rivers for irrigation in areas like Solothurn.
Environmental impacts are widespread. Water levels in Lake Zurich, Lake Constance, and the Lower Rhine have dropped significantly, disrupting shipping routes and forcing companies to cancel services. In central Swiss mountain regions near Mount Pilatus, local springs have dried up, forcing residents to rely on drinking water delivered by tankers and tractors.
In some municipalities, groundwater levels have reached historic lows, leading to mandatory bans on irrigation and potential fines for violations. While some areas initially relied on voluntary conservation, the severity of the shortage has necessitated compulsory measures.
