Switzerland imposes firework bans for National Day celebrations

The cantons of Basel-Stadt and Zürich have announced strict fire and firework bans for the upcoming Swiss National Day celebrations. Basel-Stadt will hold the annual Bundesfeier on the Rhine on Friday, 31 July, with an absolute prohibition on fire‑ignition and fireworks. Thousands of visitors are expected, prompting traffic closures on several bridges, restrictions on bicycle use, and a reduced speed limit for small vessels on the river. Police and rescue services will maintain a visible presence throughout the event.

In Zürich, the forest fire‑prevention ban that began on 26 June has been extended through the National Day on 1 August 2026. The ban prohibits all open fires and fireworks within 50 m of forest edges, requires a 200 m safety distance for fireworks, and allows only gas or electric grills under strict safety conditions. No exemptions will be granted.
