Switzerland investigates fraud linked to Ukrainian call centers

Swiss authorities are investigating a large-scale fraud operation linked to Ukrainian call centers. According to reports from Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) and the police network NEDIK, there has been a rise in digital crime offenses suspected of having ties to Ukraine.

International investigations involving Swiss authorities have identified at least four fraudulent call centers operating in Ukraine. These operations have targeted citizens in Switzerland and Germany. In one specific investigation by Bern authorities, losses in Switzerland from a single platform linked to a Kiev-based operation reached nearly 4 million Swiss francs.

Ukrainian nationals have also been arrested in various Swiss cantons, including St. Gallen and Aargau, on suspicion of acting as cash collectors for these telephone scams. While the connection between these local collectors and the overseas call centers is still being established, the scale of the industry is significant. The Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC) estimates that approximately 60,000 Ukrainians may work in such fraudulent centers, a market that could have generated up to 1 billion dollars per month at its peak.
