Switzerland July 2026 Unemployment Steady in Appenzell Ausserrhoden and St. Gallen

In the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, the Regional Employment Centre (RAV) recorded 838 job seekers at the end of July 2026, 6 more than in June. The unemployment rate held at 1.6%, unchanged from the previous month and up from 1.5% a year earlier. Of the 472 unemployed, 43 were aged 15‑24, 189 were over 50, and 62 were long‑term unemployed. The centre listed 109 open vacancies.

In the neighboring canton of St. Gallen, 11,405 persons were registered as job seekers, an increase of 814 compared with July 2025 but 14 fewer than in June 2026. The unemployment level remained largely unchanged, with 3,935 open positions reported. Short‑time work (Kurzarbeit) covered 1,152 employees across 37 firms for August 2026. Job‑seeker growth was strongest among 15‑24‑year‑olds (+11.3% YoY) and the service sector, while industrial demand rose more modestly.
