Switzerland launches first autonomous robotaxi pilot project
Switzerland has launched its first autonomous robotaxi pilot project, known as ‘iamo’ (intelligent automated mobility), in the Furttal region of the Canton of Zurich. Starting September 28, 2026, residents in the municipalities of Boppelsen, Dänikon, Hüttikon, and Otelfingen can book rides using a dedicated mobile application.
The pilot involves three electric vehicles that operate daily between 13:00 and 17:00. While the vehicles drive autonomously in regular traffic, a safety person remains in the driver's seat for security purposes, leaving the passenger seat empty. Each vehicle can carry up to three passengers, picking them up from approximately 100 predefined stops.
Developed by the Swiss Transit Lab in collaboration with the Cantons of Zurich and Aargau and Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), the project aims to test how automated technology can enhance public transport, particularly for ‘first and last mile’ connectivity in rural areas. The service follows extensive testing, including the creation of high-precision digital maps in 2025 and official authorization from the Federal Roads Office (ASTRA).
As this is a pilot program, the service is not yet integrated into the standard Swiss public transport ticketing system. Rides are priced with a base fee of 4.70 Swiss francs plus 0.38 Swiss francs per kilometer.
