Switzerland: Majority of voters oppose F-35 fighter jet purchase

A recent opinion poll indicates that a significant majority of the Swiss population opposes the procurement of American F-35 fighter jets. According to the survey, 65 percent of respondents are against the deal, while only 28 percent support it.

Public sentiment has shifted following a parliamentary report revealing that previous claims regarding a fixed price for the 36 aircraft in the contract were inaccurate. This controversy has led to calls for a parliamentary investigation commission (PUK) to determine if the issue stemmed from individual failures or institutional flaws within the Department of Defense, Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (VBS). National Councilor Gerhard Pfister has expressed support for such an inquiry, despite some opposition within his own party.

If the agreement is canceled, it could potentially reopen the door for competitors like Saab and its Gripen fighter jets. The Swiss government faces additional pressure to fund drone battalions and long-range air defense systems while managing potential budget constraints.
