Switzerland marks its National Day on 1 August with widespread festivities, official ceremonies and public gatherings. Federal Council President Guy Parmelin attended the opening events in Renens, delivering a speech that highlighted the country's democratic traditions and cultural diversity.

Ahead of the holiday, most cantons imposed a ban on private fireworks because of severe drought and heightened forest‑fire risk. Nevertheless, authorities in several cantons granted exemptions for official displays, allowing fireworks over Lake Thun, Lake Zurich and other lakes, a move that sparked criticism from opposition parties.

In the financial markets, the Swiss Market Index (SMI) rose about 0.35 % to 14 443 points on the trading day before the holiday, driven by a rebound in semiconductor stocks. By contrast, cement group Holcim saw its share price drop 2.8 % to 73.34 francs after posting first‑half results that, while beating earnings expectations, fell short of analysts’ higher outlook hopes. The Swiss stock exchange will be closed on 1 August for the public holiday.
