Switzerland misses recycling targets amid plastic waste challenges

Switzerland has narrowly missed its 2025 goal of recycling 55 percent of municipal waste, according to the Federal Office for the Environment (Bafu). While the country's overall recycling rate of 52 percent remains above the EU average of 48 percent, significant disparities exist between different materials.

Recycling rates for glass, aluminum, and PET bottles are high, reaching nearly 100 percent, 90 percent, and 84 percent respectively. However, plastic recycling lags significantly behind neighboring Germany and Austria, which both exceed 60 percent. This discrepancy is attributed to a fragmented system where packaging plastics are classified as municipal waste, leaving collection methods to vary by municipality and region.

To address waste production and resource consumption, community initiatives like the Glarner Repair-Café are emerging. Organized by the non-profit KlimaGlarus.ch, these events offer free repairs for broken items to prevent them from entering the waste stream. Switzerland's next recycling targets are set at 60 percent for 2030 and 65 percent for 2035.
