Switzerland nuclear plant costs estimated at 14 to 43 billion francs
A new report from the Swiss Academies of Sciences estimates that constructing new nuclear power plants in Switzerland could cost between 14 billion and 43 billion Swiss francs. The study highlights significant financial uncertainty depending on the reactor size and potential construction delays.
Researchers analyzed two primary options: a 1250 MW model from Westinghouse and a larger 1630 MW model from EDF. In an optimistic scenario, costs for the Westinghouse reactor are estimated at 14 billion francs, while the EDF model would cost 21 billion. However, under less optimistic scenarios involving typical industry delays, costs could rise to 25 billion for the Westinghouse model and 43 billion for the EDF model.
The report notes that these estimates include financing costs during the construction period, which adds 20 to 30 percent to the total. Experts suggest that such large-scale projects would likely require significant state financial support to be feasible. This study provides a much higher estimate than previous calculations, such as those from the energy company Axpo, which projected costs around 10 billion francs.
