Switzerland plans transit toll for vehicles crossing the country

The Swiss Parliament has approved plans to introduce a transit fee for vehicles traveling through Switzerland from one neighboring country to another without making a significant stay. This measure specifically targets north-south traffic, such as travelers heading toward Italy, to reduce road congestion and better manage traffic across the Alpine axes.

The Swiss National Council approved the introduction of the transit fee in March 2026, following a unanimous decision by the Council of States. The Federal Council is now tasked with developing the specific implementation details, which may include potential constitutional amendments. While exact pricing has not been finalized, reports suggest a fee of approximately 21 Swiss francs could be implemented. This additional cost would be required in addition to the standard motorway vignette, potentially increasing the expense for travelers using Swiss routes as an alternative to the Brenner Pass.
