Switzerland plans transit toll for vehicles crossing to Italy

The Swiss Parliament has approved plans to introduce a transit fee for vehicles traveling through Switzerland from one neighboring country to another without making a significant stay. The measure specifically targets north-south traffic, such as travelers heading toward Italy to avoid congestion on the Brenner route.

The Swiss National Council approved the introduction of this transit fee in March, following a unanimous decision by the Council of States. The Federal Council is now tasked with developing the specific implementation details, which may include constitutional amendments. While exact pricing has not been finalized, reports suggest a potential fee of approximately 21 Swiss francs.

The goal of the new charge is to reduce road congestion and better manage traffic flow across the Alpine axes.
