Switzerland plans transit toll to manage north-south traffic

Switzerland is planning to introduce a transit toll for vehicles traveling through the country from one neighboring nation to another without making a significant stay. The Swiss National Council approved the measure in March 2026, with the goal of reducing road congestion and better managing north-south traffic, particularly for travelers heading toward Italy.

The proposed fee would apply to motorists who already possess a vignette but are using Swiss routes as an alternative to the heavily congested Brenner route. While specific pricing has not been finalized, reports suggest a potential fee of approximately 21 Swiss francs per transit. The Federal Council is now tasked with developing the implementation details, which may include constitutional adjustments.

This legislative move follows significant traffic issues at major transit points like the Gotthard Tunnel. Data from the period between July 11 and September 22 shows that traffic congestion occurred at the Gotthard on 73 out of 74 days. Peak congestion typically occurs on Saturdays and during the afternoon hours, with total congestion hours on the national highway network reaching record levels.
