Switzerland to vote on strengthening national neutrality
Swiss voters are set to decide on a referendum regarding the reinforcement of national neutrality. The proposed amendment, championed by the right-wing Swiss People's Party (UDC), seeks to establish a stricter legal framework for the country's non-alignment.
Key provisions of the initiative include prohibiting Switzerland from joining military alliances such as NATO during peacetime and restricting the implementation of economic sanctions unless they are mandated by the United Nations. Proponents, including politician Christoph Blocher, argue that current practices—such as adopting European-style sanctions against Russia following the invasion of Ukraine—have compromised Switzerland's credibility and security.
Conversely, the Swiss government and various political leaders, including Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis, oppose the measure. They warn that a rigid interpretation of neutrality could isolate the country from Europe and weaken its national defense capabilities and ability to respond to global contingencies.
