Switzerland releases intelligence dossier on Nazi criminal Josef Mengele

The Swiss Federal Intelligence Service (NDB) has released a 200-page dossier concerning Nazi war criminal Josef Mengele, known as the ‘Angel of Death’ for his medical experiments at Auschwitz. The documents, which were previously scheduled to remain sealed until 2071, were made public following a successful legal challenge by historian Gérard Wettstein at the Federal Administrative Court.

The dossier includes police reports, newspaper clippings, and intelligence indicating that Mengele may have returned to Switzerland or planned to enter the country under an alias after fleeing Germany. It also contains information regarding his alleged presence in other locations, such as Ireland, Argentina, and Chile, as well as a 1964 report of an Israeli agent operating in Switzerland to track him.

While the files are now available online, certain sections have been redacted to protect the identities of third parties and the privacy of former and current federal employees. The dossier was originally compiled by the police service of the federal prosecutor’s office and transferred to the Federal Archives in 2001.
