Switzerland remains a top destination for German emigrants
Switzerland continues to be one of the world's most popular destinations for emigrants, particularly those from Germany. High average gross salaries, which stand at approximately 6,000 Swiss francs per month compared to roughly 3,400 euros in Germany, serve as a significant draw. Additionally, the country's relatively simple tax system attracts entrepreneurs, freelancers, and high-net-worth individuals.
However, these financial advantages are partially offset by a high cost of living, with expenses in many areas exceeding the EU average by more than 50 percent. High rental costs require careful financial planning. While some cantons previously offered lump-sum taxation for wealthy foreigners, several cantons, including Zurich and Schaffhausen, have abolished this privilege following public votes.
In Germany, there is a growing trend of young people leaving the country. Data indicates that approximately 290,000 Germans left the country last year, resulting in a net loss of about 100,000 people. This trend is most pronounced among the 18 to 45 age demographic, driven largely by economic motivations and the search for better future opportunities in neighboring countries like Switzerland and Austria.
