Switzerland reports rising social assistance and tourism recovery forecasts

Data from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) indicates that approximately 267,300 people in Switzerland received social assistance in 2025, representing a social assistance rate of 2.9 percent. While there was a 4.5 percent annual increase, officials note this figure should be interpreted with caution due to a modernized statistical methodology. Children and adolescents remain the most vulnerable group with a 4.8 percent rate, while foreign nationals show a rate of 5.4 percent compared to 1.9 percent for Swiss citizens. Single-parent families also face increased dependency, with nearly six out of ten children in such households affected.

In the tourism sector, BAK Economics forecasts a slight recovery for the 2026/27 winter season. Overnight stays are expected to rise by 0.9 percent to 18.9 million, following a 0.8 percent decline during the summer season. The decline in summer marked the first drop after several record-breaking seasons. Analysts suggest that geopolitical tensions, specifically the conflict in Iran, continue to impact tourism by affecting international air traffic and increasing fuel costs, particularly impacting demand from Asia. Looking further ahead, a total of 44.2 million overnight stays are projected for 2027.
