Switzerland requests 1 billion euros for air defense

The Swiss government has requested an additional 970 million Swiss francs (approximately 1 billion euros) from Parliament to fund its air defense capabilities. This request comes less than six months after the 2026 armament program was unveiled.

The additional funds are intended to ensure delivery timelines for critical acquisitions and prevent capacity gaps. The Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) aims to cover more territory and protect critical infrastructure by increasing the availability of missiles and defense systems.

Key components of the defense program include the purchase of additional IRIS-T SLM medium-range batteries from Diehl Defence, the acquisition of the Oerlikon Skynex short-range system from Rheinmetall Air Defence AG, and investments in anti-drone capabilities and semi-stationary medium-range radar systems.
