Switzerland sees drop in authority impersonation calls

New caller ID labeling requirements in Switzerland have led to a significant drop in fraudulent calls impersonating authorities. Following the expansion of labeling to mobile numbers on July 1, 2026, reports of such calls fell by more than 75 percent compared to previous months.

Despite this decline, cybercrime remains a major threat. The BACS reports a high volume of voluntary reports and mandatory cyber incidents. Criminals are increasingly using artificial intelligence to create highly personalized and convincing content. Targets include job seekers lured by fake employment offers and victims of Microsoft-365 phishing attacks where business email accounts are compromised.

In the Canton of Bern, authorities have issued specific warnings regarding fraudulent messages and letters claiming to be from tax officials. These scams utilize email, SMS, QR codes, and physical mail to solicit personal data or payments, often using threats of legal consequences or promises of tax refunds to deceive victims.
