Switzerland sees rise in wolf numbers and packs

The annual report of the Kora Foundation shows that Switzerland's wolf population grew to 350 individuals forming 43 packs, up by four packs from the previous year. Between February 2025 and January 2026, 89 wolves were shot, mainly juveniles, while 77 were actually culled during the 2025/26 season under intensified regulation. The Swiss government has paid roughly five million Swiss francs in compensation to farmers for livestock losses caused by wolves. Genetic analysis indicates increasing diversity, with the first central‑European female wolf identified in the country. The expansion continues despite culling measures, and a national research project on wolves and other large predators has been launched.

The report also notes broader predator trends: lynx numbers are rising in the Upper Valais, bears have been recorded but are not yet established, and golden jackal sightings have increased across eight cantons.
