Switzerland spatial planning report highlights urban growth and work zone needs

A 2026 report on the cantonal structure plan highlights significant trends in Swiss spatial development, noting that population and employment growth continue to rise. While employment growth aligns with structural plan targets, population growth has not met specific targets for urban densification areas; instead, the “landscape with compact settlements” type has grown more than anticipated.

Data shows that over 75 percent of population growth occurred in already developed areas, contributing to efficient land use. However, challenges remain regarding the availability of work zones. Despite sufficient theoretical building zones, many areas are difficult to access for business expansions or new companies. Consequently, the government intends to further develop the management of work zones.

Additionally, the report addresses the need to better coordinate settlement and transport. While traffic loads and motorization rates remain high, there is an increasing demand for public transportation, necessitating improved integration of all transport modes and spatial types.
