Switzerland tire regulations and safety recommendations

In Switzerland, motorists are permitted to use different tire brands on a single vehicle, though experts warn of potential safety risks. While Swiss regulations do not require all four tires to be from the same manufacturer, using mismatched brands can negatively impact braking performance, cornering stability, and handling in wet conditions. This risk is heightened if tires on the same axle have different rubber compounds, profiles, or wear levels.

Regarding seasonal equipment, winter tires are not legally mandatory in Switzerland, and there is no official period during which they must be used. However, drivers are legally required to ensure their vehicle is appropriately equipped for prevailing weather conditions. The Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) recommends using winter-capable tires from October until Easter, though actual weather conditions should dictate the changeover.

Legal minimum tread depth for all tires is 1.6 mm. However, both ASTRA and the Touring Club Schweiz (TCS) recommend a minimum of 3 mm for summer tires and 4 mm for winter tires to ensure adequate performance on snow and slush.
