Switzerland to adopt EU flight‑delay compensation rules, offering up to €600

Swiss courts have long refused to award compensation for flight delays, even though the EU passenger‑rights regulation provides it. The current legal gap forces Swiss travelers to sue in European courts.

A revised EU regulation, expected to take effect in summer 2027, will likely be incorporated by Switzerland at the same time. Under the new rules, airlines must pay compensation of €250, €400 or €600 for delays of more than three hours, depending on distance. Additional consumer‑protection measures include a nine‑month claim period, clearer definitions of extraordinary circumstances, and faster airline responses to cancellations and no‑show situations.

The change aims to align Swiss passenger rights with those of EU members, simplifying claims and strengthening consumer safeguards.
