Switzerland to deploy military drone battalion by 2028

Switzerland has announced plans to establish a dedicated military drone battalion by 2028 to handle reconnaissance, operations, and defense. The Swiss Defence Ministry identified drones, counter-drone technology, and robotics as strategic priorities following an increase in drone sightings over military and critical infrastructure.

The initiative includes the creation of a specialized civilian-military center for drones and robotics, featuring both a technology hub and a military command. This center aims to facilitate the joint development, testing, and rapid deployment of new military solutions through collaboration with scientific communities and the business sector.

To support this new unit, the government will implement specialized recruitment and training programs, including a dedicated school for recruits. This move comes amid a broader trend of rearmament across Europe and reflects Switzerland's commitment to maintaining its tradition of well-armed neutrality.
