Switzerland to introduce transit toll for north-south travelers

The Swiss Parliament has approved plans to introduce a transit toll for vehicles passing through Switzerland from one neighboring country to another without making a significant stay. This measure, approved by the National Council in March 2026 and unanimously by the Council of States, specifically targets north-south transit traffic, such as travelers heading toward Italy.

The goal of the fee is to reduce the burden on Swiss roads and better manage traffic flow across the Alpine axes. While the Federal Council is tasked with developing the specific implementation and potential constitutional adjustments, exact pricing has not yet been finalized. Some reports suggest a potential fee of approximately 21 Swiss francs per transit.
