Switzerland tourism and agriculture face housing and climate challenges

A study by the University of Lausanne, commissioned by the Federal Office of Housing, highlights significant housing challenges for seasonal workers in Swiss winter sports destinations such as Adelboden, Leysin, Saas-Fee, and Villars-sur-Ollon. The research indicates that high housing costs are the primary obstacle for these essential employees, impacting their ability to save money and their decision to return for future seasons. Workers prioritize affordable accommodation located near their workplaces to minimize mobility costs.

In the Valais region, the wine harvest has begun exceptionally early due to rising temperatures. At Domaine Besse in Martigny, harvesting started in mid-August, a timing comparable to the extreme heat of 2003. While the grapes are healthy, they contain less juice, and the industry faces concerns regarding low market demand.
