Switzerland tourism sees decline in August overnight stays

Swiss hotel overnight stays declined in August 2026, according to data from the Federal Statistical Office (BFS). The country recorded approximately 4.88 million overnight stays, representing a 2.1 percent decrease compared to the same month in the previous year.

The decline was observed among both international and domestic travelers. International overnight stays fell by 2.6 percent, while domestic stays decreased by 1.5 percent. A significant factor in this downturn is the weakening demand from key international markets. Specifically, overnight stays from tourists from India dropped by approximately 23 percent, those from Gulf countries fell by 16 percent, and those from China decreased by nearly 7 percent.

Reports indicate that tensions in the Middle East have impacted international air traffic. Conflicts affecting major aviation hubs such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha have disrupted flight paths and travel routes to Switzerland. Despite the August dip, domestic tourism has shown more resilience, with Swiss tourist stays increasing by 0.9 percent between January and August 2026.
