Switzerland upholds E-ID vote and prepares biometric ID rollout

The Swiss Federal Supreme Court has upheld the validity of the electronic identity (E-ID) vote, dismissing lawsuits that sought to annul the results due to alleged procedural errors and transparency issues. Many of the complaints were ruled inadmissible because they were filed after the legal deadlines. A central point of contention involved approximately 163,000 Swiss francs in non-monetary support provided by media companies Ringier and TX Group, which had not been disclosed within the required timeframes during the campaign.

In related developments regarding national identification, Switzerland is preparing to introduce biometric identity cards by late 2026. These cards will include a chip storing facial images and two fingerprints to ensure continued seamless travel within the European Union. To support this rollout, a new identity document office will open in Sargans by early November, expanding services beyond the central location in St. Gallen. The Sargans office will facilitate the collection of biometric data for Swiss passports, biometric identity cards, and various travel documents for foreign nationals.
