Switzerland warns of WhatsApp fraud and pension fund data breach

Authorities in Switzerland are warning of various cybercrime tactics targeting individuals through WhatsApp and fraudulent investment schemes.

In one instance, criminals are hijacking WhatsApp accounts to send fraudulent links or request money via direct messages and status updates. Because the profile pictures, phone numbers, and chat histories remain unchanged, the deception is difficult to detect. Victims are advised to verify all financial requests independently and never share security codes.

Separately, a ransomware attack on a software service provider for a pension fund in late September 2026 resulted in a data breach. Stolen information may include names, addresses, phone numbers, salary details, and pension assets. Criminals may use this sensitive data to pose as financial advisors or brokers over the phone, attempting to trick victims into making fraudulent investments by claiming they can achieve higher returns on pension funds.
