Switzerland wolf attacks spark debate over hunting law revisions
A recent wolf attack in Démoret, near Vuissens in the canton of Vaud, resulted in the death of approximately ten ewes. This incident follows another attack near Yvonand just one week prior, where three sheep were killed.
These predatory incidents have intensified the debate regarding Switzerland's hunting laws. The Confederation is proposing a revision to allow the culling of problematic wolves even during their spring breeding season. While the canton of Vaud supports the revision under the condition that such shootings remain exceptional and strictly limited to problematic wolves, environmental groups are protesting the move.
The association Avenir Loup-Lynx Jura has expressed strong opposition, arguing that destabilizing packs could potentially lead to an increase in attacks. The group has indicated a readiness to launch a referendum if the parliament adopts the proposed changes.
