Switzerland's consensus-based political model
The Swiss political system is characterized by its unique consensus-based model, which operates without a single powerful president or chancellor. Instead, executive power is shared among seven specialist ministers known as the Federal Council. This structure aims to reduce political polarization by integrating various parties and avoiding a traditional opposition model. The presidency rotates annually among the ministers, preventing the concentration of power in a single figurehead.
Journalist Urs Leuthard highlights the exceptional level of citizen participation in Switzerland, noting that the country offers a degree of political influence that is rare globally. Discussions regarding the system also touch upon modern political shifts, such as the diverging views between young men and women on issues like climate change and gender equality.
