Tivaouane religious leaders face legal dispute over funding allegations
A legal and public dispute has escalated within the family of the late Serigne Cheikh Ahmed Tidiane Sy Al Maktoum in Tivaouane. Serigne Abdou Sy Al Maktoum has announced intentions to file legal complaints against his brother, Serigne Moustapha Sy Al Maktoum, the moral leader of the Moustarchidines Wal Moustarchidaty movement.
Serigne Abdou Sy has leveled several serious accusations, including claims that Serigne Moustapha Sy used political funds from President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to finance the Gamou religious celebrations at the Tivaouane racecourse. He also addressed controversial claims made by his brother regarding their late father, specifically allegations that the father was “isolated then poisoned.”
The Dahiratoul Moustarchidina Wal Moustarchidaty has issued a formal communiqué categorically rejecting the allegations of political financing. The organization maintains that the decision not to host Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko during recent ceremonies was a “sovereign and fully assumed” choice. Meanwhile, political leaders from the ruling PASTEF party have largely opted for a strategy of silence to avoid escalating tensions between the state and influential religious figures.
