Sydney Airport flight delays caused by air‑traffic controller shortage
On Friday morning dozens of flights out of Sydney Airport were delayed by up to 80 minutes after Airservices Australia imposed Air Traffic Flow Management measures in response to a shortage of air‑traffic controllers. More than 75 Qantas flights, including QantasLink and Jetstar services, and Virgin Australia flights were affected; some flights were cancelled and passengers reported delays of one to one‑and‑a‑half hours. The disruptions lasted from about 08:20 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., with an average wait of 28 minutes and thousands of passengers missing connections.
A4ANZ chief Stephen Beckett warned that “[they need to] ensure there are enough air‑traffic controllers, so that when people are unwell or have other commitments, the national network doesn’t grind to a halt,” adding that “Thousands of passengers are disrupted, with some missing international connections. This has to stop.” Airservices later lifted the ATFM measures, stating capacity had been restored.
Passenger accounts described radar failures and backup radar problems that forced aircraft to return to gates for technical checks before finally departing, illustrating the operational impact of the controller shortage on the broader Australian air network.
