Sydney Airport Near-Miss Incident Under Investigation

On July 27, a Qantas Boeing 737 arriving from Queenstown was cleared to cross a runway at Sydney Airport while a Qantas Bombardier DHC‑8 from Canberra was in the landing roll, creating a near‑miss situation. No injuries were reported.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has opened an investigation into the breakdown of coordination between air traffic control and the two flights. Investigators are interviewing crew and airline staff and reviewing recorded data, with Airservices Australia assisting the probe.

The incident follows earlier concerns about staffing shortages at Airservices Australia that caused widespread flight cancellations and delays at Sydney Airport earlier in the year.
