Sydney Airport runway near misses prompt fatigue investigation
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has released preliminary reports investigating six recent incidents at Sydney Airport, including four runway near misses occurring between July and August. One incident on July 27, involving a Boeing 747 and a Bombardier DCH-8, has been classified as a ‘Cat A runway incursion’, the most serious level on an international scale and only the third such occurrence in Australia since 2003.
Investigators are focusing on air traffic control staffing and fatigue. ATSB Commissioner Angus Mitchell noted that Airservices’ own roster modelling predicted elevated fatigue risks for staff during many of the occurrences. While the bureau has not yet determined if staffing levels directly caused the incidents, resourcing within Sydney Tower has emerged as a recurring area of inquiry.
In all six cases, safety interventions by pilots, ground crew, or air traffic controllers prevented more serious collisions. One incident resulted in a flight attendant suffering a fractured wrist.
