Sydney building collapse injures two, damages vehicles

On 3 August 2026 at about 11 a.m. local time, a portion of a building under construction collapsed beside a Shell service station on Wattle Street in the Ultimo district of Sydney, Australia. The failure of a concrete retaining wall sent bricks and debris onto several parked cars, crushing the vehicles and prompting the closure of the service station and the evacuation of nearby premises.

Two men – one in his sixties and another in his thirties – were rescued from the rubble and taken in serious condition to St Vincent’s Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Five other people received on‑site medical checks but required no hospitalization. Fire and Rescue NSW, police and safety inspectors secured the site, and the NSW Building Commission and SafeWork NSW launched investigations into the cause. The collapse occurred at a site slated for a 2020‑approved redevelopment project valued at roughly AU$9.5 million.
