Sydney Curling Club discusses new facility location near Centre 200
The Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) is in discussions with the Sydney Curling Club regarding a potential new location for its facility next to Centre 200. This proposed move represents a shift from the club’s previous plan to build near Open Hearth Park on land it had already purchased.
The new facility would aim to expand the club’s capacity from four sheets of ice to six, a 50 per cent increase. The project would integrate with the downtown arena as part of a proposed $78-million modernization project for Centre 200. Such an expansion could bolster the region’s ability to host major curling events, following Centre 200’s history of hosting the Scotties Tournament of Hearts and the World Women’s Curling Championship.
This development comes amid rising interest in the sport, with Curling Canada reporting record registration numbers for the 2024-25 season.
