Sydney farewells last K-set silver passenger trains

Sydney has bid farewell to its distinctive K-set silver passenger trains, marking the end of an era for the city’s stainless-steel suburban rail fleet. The final passenger service departed from Central Station, traveling to Olympic Park after a loop of the city.

The final journey was operated by Sydney Trains’ longest-serving driver, Vince Vassiliou, and most senior guard, Pat Breen, both of whom have 59 years of experience on the railways. Vassiliou, 75, has been driving K-sets for 44 years.

While the final service proceeded successfully, earlier farewell trips during the week were canceled due to vandalism and unruly behavior. The K-set trains, which first entered service in October 1981, are being replaced by newer models.
