Sydney FC to release Akol Akon for FIFA U-17 World Cup
Sydney FC has reversed its previous decision regarding teenage player Akol Akon, confirming the midfielder will be available for the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup if selected by the Australian national team, known as the Joeys.
The club initially indicated it would not release Akon, citing concerns over squad depth and the importance of his role in the A-League Men season. However, following discussions with Football Australia and Joeys head coach Carl Veart, a solution was reached to allow his participation.
Sydney FC Executive Vice Chairman Sebastian Gray stated that while the club must balance national representation with its own competitive ambitions and trophy goals, it views developing the next generation of Socceroos and Matildas as a responsibility to the national game. The club already has seven players participating in the U-17 Women’s World Cup.
