Sydney George Street to undergo $25.8m pedestrianisation
The NSW Government and the City of Sydney have unveiled a $25.8 million plan to permanently pedestrianise the northernmost section of Sydney’s George Street corridor. The project aims to transform the historic precinct into a retail and hospitality hub by prioritising pedestrians over vehicle traffic.
The upgrades, scheduled for completion by late 2028, will involve converting vehicle lanes into wide footpaths, removing traffic lights, and making temporary outdoor dining spaces permanent between Essex Street and Jack Mundey Place. Construction is expected to commence in 2027.
City of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore stated the initiative is the final stage of a long-term project to turn the corridor from a “noisy, polluted traffic jam” into a space that supports local business and the city’s cultural life.
