Judge reduces sentences for men in machete attack due to rehab needs

A judge at Sydney’s Downing Centre has reduced the non-parole periods for two men involved in a violent machete attack, citing the necessity for drug rehabilitation.

Frederick Thomas Moran, 29, and Thomas House, 23, pleaded guilty to reckless grievous bodily harm in company. During sentencing, it was established that both men were regular methamphetamine users at the time of the June 22, 2025, incident. Judge Jillian Kelton ruled that their drug use constituted special circumstances, necessitating community-based rehabilitation.

The attack occurred following an allegation that a 25-year-old victim had stolen car keys. Text messages exchanged between the defendants prior to the assault indicated violent intent. The victim had been living with Moran in the weeks leading up to the attack.
