Sydney Marathon medals mistakenly feature Munich's Allianz Arena
Organizers of the Sydney Marathon have acknowledged a design error on the finisher medals for the upcoming race on August 30. While the medals were intended to feature Sydney landmarks such as the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, they mistakenly include an engraving of the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, instead of the local Allianz Stadium in Sydney.
The error was discovered by participants on social media after the design was unveiled. Organizers admitted to the “unfortunate error,” noting that “a little too much international flair” had made its way onto the medal. Despite the mistake, officials stated they will not replace the medals, suggesting the error makes the award “a little more unique.”
The Sydney Marathon, which is part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, expects approximately 40,000 participants. The Allianz Arena in Munich responded to the news with humor on social media, noting the unexpected appearance on the medal.
