Sydney Marathon organizers acknowledge medal design error

The Sydney Marathon, a member of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, is set to take place on August 30 with approximately 40,000 participants expected. The race route features iconic landmarks including the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House.

Ahead of the event, organizers faced scrutiny after internet users identified a significant error on the finisher medals. While the medal was intended to feature a panorama of Sydney, the design mistakenly included an image of the Allianz Arena in Munich rather than the Allianz Stadium in Sydney.

Organizers acknowledged the mistake, stating it was an unfortunate error that provided a topic for discussion, but noted that medals would not be replaced, instead describing them as ‘somewhat more unique’. The Allianz Arena's official profile also commented on the error jokingly.
