Sydney Marathon to boost economy and hospitality
The upcoming Sydney Marathon is expected to provide a significant boost to the local economy, with an estimated $120 million influx into the visitor economy. The event, which has achieved Abbott World Major status, is projected to attract 40,000 runners from 162 countries and a broadcast audience exceeding 20 million viewers.
In response to the event, the City of Sydney has implemented vibrancy reforms allowing hospitality businesses in the city centre, Pyrmont, Darlinghurst, Surry Hills, and Paddington to begin trading from 4:00 am on race day without requiring special permission. This measure aims to support shops, cafes, and restaurants serving the thousands of expected spectators and participants.
Hotel occupancy in the Sydney CBD is also seeing a surge, with forward bookings reaching approximately 87.2%. While slightly below the record 92.8% occupancy seen during the same period last year, industry representatives note that the marathon is helping drive tourism back to the central business district.
