Sydney Metro south-west extension nears completion
The final 13-kilometre completion of the M1 Metro line in Sydney's south-west corridor is approaching, following a two-year closure that began in September 2024. A recent community open day at Dulwich Hill station drew hundreds of residents eager for the return of rail services.
Commuters have been utilizing replacement buses between Sydenham and Bankstown during the conversion process. While passengers noted the replacement buses were well-managed, there is significant anticipation for the end of long commute times. Approximately 9,500 passengers are expected to use the line during the morning peak once it reopens.
Metro Project Director Alia Karaman noted that while some stations like Bankstown feature major additions like a new plaza, others such as Dulwich Hill underwent complex technical challenges due to curved tracks and proximity to freight lines. Renovations include new Metro doors and fresh paint.
